Available is a stunning English yew & bog oak handled knife

Handle: The main part of the handle is made from a beautifully figured piece of English yew from Suffolk. The Yew tree is deeply embedded in the culture of the British Isles. One of the oldest surviving man-made objects found in the northern hemisphere is a spearhead made of yew dating back at least 150 000 years to the dawn of man. Yew was the wood of choice for longbows because of its strength and resistive qualities, the wood of the yew being the hardest around, so dense it sinks in water. Arrows used to be tipped with the toxic sap of the yew in order to poison the enemy.

Between the handle and the blade is piece of ancient bog oak thousands of years old buried deep in the bogs of Lincolnshire.  Bog Oak is one of the world’s rarest and sought-after species of bog wood. Bog Oak originates from tree trunks that have started to fossilize in peat bogs, lakes, river bottoms, and swamps for centuries and even millennia. Deprived of oxygen, the wood undergoes a slow morta-formation process, where water currents help bind earthly minerals and iron with tannins in the wood, giving the wood a natural, beautiful stain, unlike anything else.

A beautifully polished large diameter section of brass tubing has been placed in the rear of the handle.

Blade: Hewn & Hone 6.3mm round tang, approx 60 x 2mm, bearing steel.

Note: This blade is forged by and heat treated by Nic Westermann, the grinding is done by Hewn & Hone. The blade is forged from 1/4″ bearing steel rod-  adds rigidity, the blade is 2mm thick at the spine with distal taper towards the tip. This small sloyd has a compound grind on the flats, this means that the 25 degree edge bevel is very short, allowing the blade to turn in a concave cut very easily, they are excellent for finishing difficult areas of a spoon, especially the neck.

The tips are very fine and these blades should not be used for prying to any degree.

Sheath: The knife is being sold as displayed. A leather slip to protect the blade can be included as an additional option.

To help keep your handle in good condition the knife includes a tin of Ash & Axe organic Cambridge beeswax and tung oil wax.

This knife is only available to purchase if you are 18+. Proof of age ID which also matches the delivery address must be provided on purchase before the item can be dispatched. For more information on knife laws in the UK, please visit this page.
