Available is a stunning 55mm carving knife made from Fenland ancient bog oak

Blade: approx 50-55 x 2mm blade bearing steel

This blade is forged by and heat treated by Nic Westermann. The blade is forged from 1/4″ bearing steel rod- this makes fitting a handle very easy and a round tang and also adds rigidity, the blade is 2mm thick at the spine with distal taper towards the tip. This small sloyd has a compound grind on the flats, this means that the 25 degree edge bevel is very short, allowing the blade to turn in a concave cut very easily, they are excellent for finishing difficult areas of a spoon, especially the neck.

The tips are very fine and these blades should not be used for prying to any degree.

Handle: The handle is crafted from a stunning piece of jet black bog oak dug up from the Fens on the Cambridgeshire/Norfolk borders and carefully air dried then kiln dried before being quarter sawn to give a beautifully contrasting pattern.

Radio carbon dating has shown these ancient giant oaks to be around 3300BC.

Lastly, Norfolk spalted beech and boxwood finish it off

Leather: The knife is being sold with a handstitched leather blade slip or a sheath is available as an option or contact me for further sheath options.
